Talk less, smile more

Talk less, smile more

Burr’s other signature motif, “talk less, smile more,” undergoes some fascinating transformations throughout the musical. At the high point of Hamilton’s and Burr’s relationship, Burr even leaves off the “talk less.” Washington is all “talk less” at the beginning of “One Last Time”–admittedly, Hamilton is babbling so much he can’t get a word in edgewise. Then Alexander sings it when he adopts Burr’s tactics in “The Room Where It Happens,” and Burr reprises it during “The Election of 1800,” turning a shifty personality trait into a bellowed campaign slogan.
