Samuel Seabury

Samuel Seabury

Samuel Seabury was first bishop of the Protestant Episcopal Church in the United States. Seabury was educated in medicine at Yale University and the University of Edinburgh. After he became a priest in 1753, he served parishes in New Brunswick, New Jersey, in Jamaica, New York, and in Westchester, New York; he also practiced medicine. He became known for his pamphlets urging Americans not to seek independence from the British crown—which evoked pamphlets in reply by the young Alexander Hamilton.
